Erie County Sheriff Timothy B. Howard reports the arrest of two individuals at the Rath Building Friday at approximately noon.
While on patrol around the Rath Building, Deputy Richard Lundberg was contacted by a concerned citizen about children left in a vehicle behind the Rath Building. When Deputy Lundberg inspected the vehicle, he observed two toddlers locked in the cab of the truck without heat. Deputy Lundberg called for a roadside service company to unlock the vehicle when the parents arrived to unlock the vehicle. The children were immediately taken into the Rath Building for warmth. Erie County Sheriff’s dispatchers contacted EMT crews to evaluate the children.
Deputies placed Chaonte Townsend, 22 of Buffalo, and Jovaun Campfield, 22 of Buffalo into custody. As deputies began inventorying the contents of the vehicle, Deputies discovered what was believed to be marijuana in the truck. The substance was found in the cab of the vehicle within reach of the children. The marijuana was turned over to the Central Police Services lab for testing.
During the investigation, it was also discovered that Campfield was in violation of an order of protection. Campfield was arrested and charged with two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, violating an order of protection, Unlawful Possession of Marijuana and Criminal Use of Drug Paraphernalia.
Deputies charged Townsend with two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Both subjects were transported to the Erie County Holding Center pending their arraignment.
Child Protective Services was contacted and took custody of the children.
