Erie County Sheriff Timothy B. Howard reports that two males were apprehended after they tried to steal motorized shopping carts from a Clarence Walmart.
On September 11, Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a call regarding two males attempting to steal motorized shopping carts from the Walmart store on Transit Rd in Clarence. When Deputies arrived the two males were spotted as they attempted to drive the stolen carts across the shopping plaza’s lawn.
The two males, Devon Janiga, 19 of East Aurora, and his 17 year old accomplice, were arrested and each charged with Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, Criminal Mischief with Intent to Damage Property and Petit Larceny – all misdemeanors.
When interviewed, the store manager reported that the two individuals removed signs designating the motorized carts for “in store use only” – Walmart provides the carts for people with disabilities.
Sheriff Howard states, “We just had a press conference yesterday about ensuring access for people with disabilities and then these two individuals steal and damage a cart provided for those shoppers with mobility issues, it’s just idiotic.”
Janiga and his accomplice were transported and held at the Erie County Holding Center until their appearance in Clarence Town Court on September 12, at 1:30 p.m.
